This tutorial will teach you several methods for playing .avi files on your computer.
VLC player seems to be the all-around best video player. It can play almost any type of video file, it doesn't come with a bunch of unnecesary extras, and it's free! You can download VLC player by clicking here. Install VLC player and then open up your .avi file in this program.
If you already have another player and don't want to install VLC player, you can install a codec which will allow the .avi file to be played with Winamp, Windows Media Player, etc. If you stumbled across this tutorial to figure out the answer to playing a torrented .avi file, then it's recommended that you install more than just this one codec. There's a pack of codecs called the "K-Lite Codec Pack" which will install pretty much all the codecs you could possibly need in order to play any type of video files you might torrent or share with friends.
So, if you are only playing .avi files, download and install ffdshow codec. (download here)
Or, if you are going to be playing various types of video media, download and install the K-Lite codec pack. (download here)
Note: Do not install ffdshow if you are going to install the K-Lite codec pack. However, if you decide to install VLC player, it's a good idea to install the K-Lite codec pack as well.
