This tutorial will teach you how you can use a free program called "Freecorder" in order to download any audio stream into .mp3 file format.

What this tutorial will allow you to do is: Navigate to a website in your browser that plays music (this website can be Myspace, Youtube, or any other site that has some sort of audio you'd like to record), and then, while playing the audio stream, it will simultaneously be downloading to your hard drive in a .mp3 file. This .mp3 file will sound exactly as it does on the web site.

To get started, you must download Freecorder by clicking here.

Installation instructions:

Everything else is fine, just make sure you only install into the browser in which you plan on using Freecorder.

Now, open up your browser (in this tutorial I will be using Mozilla Firefox). Enable the Freecorder toolbar if it is not already enabled:

Now, click "Settings" on the toolbar:

In this settings window, pick the directory where you'd like your recorded files saved, pick the quality of the file (obviously higher quality is better, but also makes for a bigger file size). As long as you plan on using Freecorder for recording sound played within the browser, then keep the "Record From Freecorder Audio Driver" option ticked, and the other options unticked. You may tick/untick these options later if you desire to record other things on your computer and not just what's played through the browser.

Now, navigate to a site where there is music (or ANY audio stream) that you'd like to record. Before playing the sound on that website, make sure you have pressed the "Record" button on the toolbar. As long as a new window pops up and looks like this (see below) it means that the sound is being recorded.

Be sure to press "Record" only right before the audio stream starts, and press "Stop" immediately after the audio stream stops, in order to make sure that you don't have empty sound at the beginning or end of your .mp3 file.

If you try recording something and the window just says "Not recording," simply try it again and make sure your browser window is selected and brought to the foreground. Keep trying if doesn't work, sometimes you have to play around with it.
